'Macbeth' takes Buxton
Not since the babbling vagabonds’ first summer of existence has a theatre group worked so hard to market a show as Butterfly in their relentless efforts for this summer’s ‘Macbeth’. It has definitely paid off - Butterfly sold out at Buxton Fringe and people were turned away despite offers to pay double for tickets.
Yet no amount of hard work explains the rave reviews – for that, the show has to be seriously good. Well known soliloquies are difficult for even seasoned professionals to interpret in a way that meaningfully connects with audiences, yet phrases like “hugely powerful”, “malevolent playfulness” and “twisted sexuality” are careening around the caves like cannon confetti.
Outdoor Shakespeare always does well during BAF, it seems to fit the environment - something about all that heightened emotion and the sheer number of loud, lofty words being bounced around by the ever unseasonal wind. And really, where else could you see the unsexing of Lady Macbeth this August? Would be a tragedy to miss it.
The Parish Church, 7.30pm, £10. Not suitable for children under 8. Please note this is mainly a promenade performance. Meet at the South Church Street gate. Performances begin at 7.30pm. Book tickets by calling 07772 543576. www.wearebutterfly.com

Shakespeare at Thornbridge Hall update

Aguecheek, Toby Belch and Malvolio (hic)
Rehearsals have begun on Twelfth Night and we think it is going to be a bumper summer fun production with lots of music and laughter. We have assembled a great cast - and we attach a photo of three of us sat outside the Bulls Head Inn at Youlgrave where we are rehearsing. Naturally Sir Toby Belch (centre) is leading the festivities.
There has been some confusion at the box office. First, you won't get wet - if it rains the whole performance will take place under cover in Thornbridge's magnificant courtyard. If the weather is fine (and we hope it will be most of the time) the show will begin outside on the lawn, where there will be time for a pre-show drink. There will be live music to listen to most evenings and the gardens to admire. The bar opens at 7pm. The play will begin with a short scene on the lawn - and there will be seats if people need them. Then we go inside and the whole audience will be seated.
So join Cotton Grass Theatre in the topsy-turvy world of Twelfth Night where fools are wise and wise men are fools, where disguises and deceptions, mistaken identity, the folly of ambition and all the many guises and games of love take us on a journey through madness, laughter and tears to a happy ending - for almost everyone!
Tickets are available from the Derby Live box office (01332 255800) and online at www.derbylive.co.uk Any other queries ring us on 07920 755435
